What is a Site Classification?

Australian Standard AS 2870 — Residential Slabs and Footings — requires that all new residential buildings and extensions be constructed on a correctly designed footing system. To determine the correct footing design, a soil investigation and site classification is required.

A site classification report assigns your site a soil reactivity class (from A through to E and P) based on the results of field investigation and laboratory testing. This classification is then used by your structural engineer or building designer to specify the appropriate footing system for your project.

Without a current, site-specific classification report, your building certifier cannot approve your plans. Our reports are prepared by QBCC licenced site classifiers and are accepted by all South East Queensland councils and private certifiers.

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes. Under Australian Standard AS 2870 and the National Construction Code, all new residential buildings and extensions require a site classification report. Your building certifier will require this as part of the building approval process.

A typical residential site visit for drilling, DCP testing, and sample collection takes approximately 1 hour. We will advise you of the expected duration when confirming your booking.

AS 2870 defines six site classes: A (stable, non-reactive), S (slightly reactive), M (moderately reactive), H1 and H2 (highly reactive), E (extremely reactive), and P. A P classification does not necessarily indicate a problem — it means the site has specific conditions that require the engineer to consider site-specific details when designing the footing system. The classification depends on the soil type and moisture conditions found during investigation. We cannot predict the classification before testing.

Yes, and we strongly recommend it. We can conduct a wind classification (AS 4055) and/or an acid sulfate soil assessment in the same site visit, saving you time and reducing overall costs. Ask us about our bundle pricing.
